At HutanBio, we are on a mission to decarbonise long-distance transportation. Following the review by Cofinitive judges, we are delighted to have been selected as a #21ToWatch winner.
The #21ToWatch campaign celebrates the People, Companies and ‘Things’ at the cutting edge of innovation and entrepreneurship in Cambridgeshire and across the East of England. You can check out the campaign in more detail at www.cofinitive.com/21towatch and learn more about the winners.
The Awards
You can hear from HutanBio Founder, John Archer PhD, as he addresses the judges before receiving the award. Held at a special ceremony at Story’s Field Centre, Eddington the #21ToWatch winners had the opportunity to share experiences, network and meet with key investors. John goes on to explain how the team are on a mission to decarbonise long-distance transportation by developing the technology to scale algae in the desert. To create bio-economies and produce carbon-negative biofuel.

John Archer PhD
Whilst electrification is great for short journeys, you cannot carry enough energy for intercontinental flights or carrying cargo across oceans.
At HutanBio, we use algae to produce carbon-negative fuel that will drop straight into existing supply chains. To make fuel for lorries, planes, and ships.
Unlike palm and soy oil, we don’t drive deforestation, cause food poverty, or take drinking.
We grow our algae in enclosed photobioreactors, using waste saltwater or seawater, and doing what nature has done for 2 billion years. Converting sunlight and carbon dioxide into flammable hydrocarbons.

Cofinitive Founder
Faye Holland, Cofinitive founder commented,
We are delighted that HutanBio has been named in our Top 21 2023 #21toWatch list. The accolade is well deserved, and we look forward to following their progress in decarbonising long-distance transport.”
Over the past 12 months, we’ve continued to collate hundreds of submissions in response to our #21toWatch campaign. The criteria set was pretty tough: each submission, whether it was a company, individual, or ‘thing’, had to demonstrate a set of attributes: Innovation; Challenge; Influence; Viability; and Memorability.
Our independent judges all agreed that all our winners have the potential for a huge impact ”.
