UKI2S backs HutanBio by investing in seed round, further recognising biology’s role in tackling climate change.

Hot on the heels of our recently announced key hire and strategic growth plans, we are delighted to announce that our seed round has advanced to £3 million with investment from UKI2S. This additional investment demonstrates the growing interest in low-carbon fuel technologies to support the drive to NetZero in the complex and more challenging Maritime and Aviation sectors.  

Investor Strength

As a major partner in this latest investment round, UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund (UKI2S) will join lead investor, Clean Growth Fund. The commitment from UKI2S, a publicly funded organisation managed by impact-led Future Planet Capital (Ventures) Limited further bolsters the growing confidence and future potential of our HBx technology. Recognising the valuable contribution advanced biology could have in combating climate change.

Through the development of our innovative HBx biofuel platform – the culmination of 10 years of research and the world’s largest-ever marine microalgae bioprospecting programme, our technology not only addresses a series of social and environmental challenges faced by other biofuel developments but has identified ways to utilise harmful carbon emissions from high polluting industries such as cement and steel production.

Further increasing our global impact and future valuation by bolstering energy security and providing a major economic stimulus whilst reducing carbon emissions. 

Optimised through directed evolution to thrive in high salinity and grown in purpose-designed enclosed photobioreactors, our patented algae, HBx, will be grown on barren, desert-like land. Along coastal regions in areas of the world with high solar radiation.

Thus avoiding prime agricultural land and removing deforestation incentives.

The strength of investment partners reinforces our position as a leader in sustainable biofuel technology development. The combined expertise and resources in-house and with our team of investors are set to drive significant advancements in the sector, propelling HutanBio towards its goal of contributing meaningfully to global NetZero targets through decarbonising long-distance transportation. In addition to lead investors Clean Growth Fund and UKI2S, Mischcon de Reya, HutanBio’s legal advisors, have been suitably impressed by the company and have invested in its future along with several Angel investors.

The Future is Green

With all the pieces in place to scale a biofuel that can decouple hard-to-abate industries from fossil fuels, HutanBio technology has an important role in climate crisis mitigation. HBx Biofuel helps bridge the Maritime Regulatory Canyon. By 2030, net zero 2050 models project a combined aviation and maritime biofuel demand of 37 million tonnes.  Crucially, this growth cannot be supported by waste feedstock streams alone and would massively compromise food production and freshwater resources. As maritime regulations come into force to drive decarbonisation efforts, addressing the availability of low-carbon fuels will become pivotal. HBx will bridge this canyon.  

With six ideal locations already identified, our ambition is to have several customer sites up and running by 2027. By 2030, we are planning to have at least two mega sites in operation.
